This iPod Dock is very unique in that it combines the features of a modern tube iPod dock with options that are normally only found on component integrated amplifiers.
To start off with, the dock has a very beautiful modern design. It reminds me of a spaceship from the old Buck Rogers TV series from the 1980’s. While the design has a very modern appearance this does have a purpose to it, in that it provides two large heat sinks down each side of the amplifier for what I would assume is cooling for the MOSFET amplifier the dock incorporates. The pre-amp section is powered by two 12AX7, tubes that enhance the docks sound quality. Unlike some of the other tube iPod docks we have tested so far the pre-amp tubes are more obscure in the design of this dock. They do give windows on the top of the dock to view the tubes but from the front they are mainly hidden from the user. With that said the result and function of the tubes are the same as all the other tube iPod docks we have tested so far. They give the dock a warm rich overall sound.
The unit offers 2 RCA inputs for a CD player and an auxiliary input. The unit additionally offers a RCA subwoofer output that is a welcome feature on an iPod Dock. It offers a RCA video out on the back panel of the dock and a headphone jack on the front panel of the dock. It also offers a USB output for syncing a docked iPod to iTunes. And the most unique feature is that it offers a low level RCA Phono input and ground connector for a turntable. This is the only iPod dock I have seen so far with a turntable input. Also as a nice touch all the connectors are gold plated.
The BO-35 speakers are a visually appealing product. They are made of a piece of clear Plexiglas attached to an aluminum tubular base. The speakers use 20mm tweeters and 4” magnetically shielded woofers in a two way ported enclosure design. They also incorporate custom speaker wire binding posts hidden on the bottoms of the speakers. The backs of the speakers use a contoured piece of plastic to cover the speaker components and incorporate a rear facing vent port. An interesting thing we found when testing these speakers with different docks is that they sounded best with the Lars & Ivan Hybrid amplifier.
Pros’s:
An excellent sound with any musical type. It offers many features that are not normally found on iPod docks. We also feel that this product is of high quality construction and made of quality materials, it also incorporates an excellent remote control, and it has an excellent price.
Con’s:
It would have larger speaker wire binding posts to directly use higher quality speaker wire, and when connected to a subwoofer that it did not make a audible “pop” when the dock is turned off.
